Participants who spent two hours walking in a forested area showed measurable reductions in cortisol, lower blood pressure, and increased NK (natural killer) cell activity, which supports immune function. The effect persisted for up to 30 days after a three-day trip. You don’t need a forest: any environment with natural elements, reduced noise, and no task demands achieves a partial version of this effect.
Ultradian Rhythms and Natural Rest Points
Nathaniel Kleitman, who discovered REM sleep, also identified 90-minute ultradian rhythms during waking hours. Roughly every 90 minutes, your brain cycles into a lower-alertness state — you may notice it as restlessness, difficulty concentrating, or a sudden urge to stretch. Most people override this with caffeine or willpower. Working with it instead means scheduling your most demanding tasks in 90-minute focused blocks, then genuinely resting — not switching to a lighter task, but actually stopping for 15-20 minutes. This matches the brain’s natural architecture rather than fighting it.
Rest as an Active Practice
Passive collapse in front of a screen isn’t the same as restorative rest. The most effective forms of rest are active in a gentle way: walking without a destination, cooking something unhurried, drawing or playing an instrument at low stakes, or having a conversation with no agenda. These activities engage the mind just enough to prevent it from spinning into rumination, while keeping attentional demands low enough that the stress systems can downregulate.
Where to Begin
Pick one change and make it structural rather than motivational. Block 20 minutes mid-afternoon in your calendar and label it “rest” — a specific time that doesn’t require a daily decision. Turn your phone face-down or leave it in another room. Lie down, step outside, or do something with your hands that has nothing to do with work. The compounding effect of this, practiced consistently over weeks, is more reliable than any productivity hack applied occasionally under pressure.
